How much time does it take to produce a podcast?
That’s the million dollar question. While there is no “one size fits all” answer, we can give you a rough idea of how long it may take. Across industry standards and our own experience, we’ve found that audio production is about a 4:1 work ratio. This means for every one minute of a produced podcast, four minutes of production work went into pre- and post production, for a combined total of five minutes. A one hour podcast is the result of 5 hours of work, 4 hours in pre- and post production and 1 hour for your produced podcast.
Factors that impact this ratio include the quality of the final podcast, how much editing needs to be done, and how fluent you are at editing and production. Experience is the best teacher and once processes and systems are nailed, you’ll hit a stride with your podcast and find a good work flow.
One of the best things about podcasting is that there’s a niche and format for any type of discussion. Some professionally produced podcasts have big money behind them and very high production value but there are many more that serve up great content without bells and whistles. One of our colleagues started a podcast by simply recording their weekly team marketing meetings. They realized publishing their discussion of the latest SEO algorithms, updates, and trends was highly educational and great inbound marketing content.
How much does it cost to produce & host a podcast?
It depends. On the low end, you could buy a USB microphone for $30-50 and a $10-15/mo hosting plan and go off to the races.
For $200-250 you could get a decent mixer, a set of microphones, a $10-15/mo hosting plan, and you could produce a finely tuned podcast that rivals the big guys. We did! Check out AMA West Michigan’s Marketer’s In Motion Podcast for an example of this approach. Decent editing software can be downloaded for free. If you subscribe to the Adobe Creative Cloud you may already have Adobe Audition, one of the most robust audio production tools at your disposal.
